Homemade Puppies. It’s not typically a word you hear paired with “puppies”, but let me tell you about us. I was raised with dogs in our home and have almost always had one in my life, if I didn’t have a dog - I was dreaming of my future dog. As Derric and I built our human family, we also actively built our dog family. Each dog member we have has been thoughtfully selected and added to our “pack”.
Time For a New Way:
We see how dogs can just be viewed as a source of revenue for breeding and we are actively working to change that as best we can. We love each of our dogs’ personalities and the part they play in our family. As we raise our dogs and understand them better, we see their desire for human affection, total trust in us, and desire to be our best companion.
We see the flaws in the current trends of dog breeding and how the ball is being dropped when it comes to the breeding process and puppy buying. When a dog is bred typically it is dropped off at the breeder and picked up a few days later after being bred. However, to a family dog this can feel like abandonment. They are accustomed to being with their family and suddenly they are in a strange area. I have heard from others that often their dogs return depressed, skinny, and even with fleas.
The Homemade Puppy Way:
Derric and I decided that when our dog was being bred we would accompany her to each appointment and stay with her the entire time. She has since been spayed and is now my running buddy.
When we added Watson to our home and started his stud service we implemented what we learned. We set up dog breeding appointments and invite the family to stay with the dog during the breeding appointment. The dog arrives and departs with their family for each appointment over the span of the breeding process.
When the puppies are born we ask that the families have their puppies in their home. The puppies are then surrounded by the sounds, scents, and people of a typical household from the moment of their birth. The mother is also at ease because she is surrounded by her family and normal environment.
We encourage the adoptive families to visit so that they are familiar to the puppy and the family sees where their puppy is being raised. If they can’t visit due to distance we encourage them to send blankets/toys for the scent of their mama to rub off on. We recommend that if puppy has to travel to their new home by airplane that they are always picked up by the family or the breeder or a puppy nanny accompanies them the entire journey so they are never out of human contact.
We hope that our venture of Homemade Puppies helps to complete your home with your next 4 legged companion and fills you with the joy each of our dogs gives us.
❤️ Sheila
