The 4th of July is almost here and it's the number one holiday in which pets go missing. Here are some tips to keep your pet safe during this 4th of July.
1. Keep your dog ( and cat) inside.
If your pet is contained in your house there is less chance they will be able to run away.
2. Wear an ID tag/ Microchip
Make sure your pet has their collar on and that it has an id tag with current contact information. Also make sure your pet has a microchip and that it is registered with current contact info.
3. TV or Music playing
By playing the TV or music loud it will drown out the sounds of fireworks that may frighten pets.
4. Stuffed Kong
Provide your pet with a Kong toy stuffed with yummy treats or another toy that will help keep them distracted.
5. Thundershirt
Thundershirts are a type of wrap around shirt your dog can wear that is shown to reduce anxiety. There are other types of anxiety wraps on the market or you can google how to make your own.
6. Snug/ well fit collar/ harness
If you have to take your dog outside, do so with a well fit collar or harness. Even in a fenced yard, dogs have been known to escape if they become very frightened.
7. Exercise earlier in the day
By exercising your dog earlier in the day when it's light out you reduce the chance that fireworks could be set off and frighten your dog.
8. Don't take dogs to firework displays
This one is pretty self explanatory. Firework displays can be very scary and loud for dogs. It's best to leave them at home.
By following these safety tips you and your pet can enjoy a wonderful 4th of July!
