History

The Rottweiler holds a surprisingly long history that began in antiquity by following the Roman armies on their travels across Europe. Descended from mastiff-type guard dogs, these imposing companions were both resourceful and strong - able to drive herds of cattle ahead of the legions and serve as guard against any potential threat. As they made their journey, these dogs interbred with local breeds creating a hybrid breed that had the strength and drive of the original Roman line. Throughout its storied past, they were employed as guarding guardians both at home and in Germany's butchers' markets where they helped transport cattle and carts in addition to providing protection. Employed for such tasks due to their size and strength, this loyal companion has since become a treasured part of family life.

Temperament

Rottweilers are renowned for their bold, confident and hardworking demeanor. Rottweilers generally have an easy-going nature with the family that they know and love. However, when it comes to strangers, they tend to be less eager to show affection and remain more aloof. Thankfully, this breed is not one that is overly excitable - instead of being highly active all the time, Rottweilers are known for being even-tempered and observant.
