About Bernese Mountain Dogs

The Bernese Mountain Dog is a breed of large, faithful working dog originally bred in the Swiss Alps. Bred for herding and draft work, these strong and robust dogs are also loyal and affectionate family pets. With their distinctive tricolor coats they often feature black fur with white patches around the chest, neck, and muzzle as well as a lighter brown color fur on their legs and face. The Bernese Mountain Dog is an ideal companion for farmers, hikers, athletes or anyone seeking a devoted friend in one big furry package.

History

The Bernese Mountain Dog is a majestic breed whose development dates back centuries. Though its exact origin remains unknown, many believe the Roman invasion of Switzerland resulted in Roman mastiffs being crossed with Swiss flock-guarding dogs to create this working dog. The Industrial Revolution nearly caused their extinction when machine use replaced manual labor for which they were most useful; however, some dedicated breeders ensured the existence of these animals and brought them to America's shores as early as 1926!

With its gentle, attentive nature and striking good looks, the Bernese Mountain Dog is a popular choice for families. These large yet trainable dogs are intelligent and sociable animals who thrive when part of an active home life with plenty of love.
