History

This breed was developed in the 19th century by ranchers and farmers, who sought a dog that could assist in herding livestock, particularly sheep. The breed's creation is often attributed to the needs of Basque sheepherders who immigrated to America, bringing their herding dogs along with them, which contributed to the development of what we now know as the Australian Shepherd.
